spielberg. are. you. fucking. serious. i was so excited for this movie & it ended up being SUCH a let down. so much of this movie was nonsensical, the plot felt weirdly disorganised, none of the characters were fleshed out enough for you to care about them & the chemistry between them was nonexistent. if you’ve seen the trailer, don’t waste your time with the movie, you’ve basically seen the entire thing. this was a two-hour chase with sprinkles of the whole alien subplot. this was barely a sci-fi, let alone the alien focused movie it was marketed as, not to mention the aliens that we did get had the default green men with big eyes design, seriously? what an absolute joke of an ending, you’re telling me nobody watching that broadcast had an inkling of doubt? random lady in missouri shows you supposed footage of aliens on earth & you’re not one bit sceptical? along with everyone blindly believing it, they also decide to avert ww3 over it? don’t even get me started on that shitty cliffhanger. it felt like it all ended right where it should’ve started, the vague climax answers practically none of the movie’s questions. why were the aliens on earth in the first place? what did all those equations mean? wtf was the outcome of everything we’ve built up to??? aside from that, emily blunts performance in this movie was oscar worthy & i do think her performance will at least earn her a nomination. but sadly, even the greatest performances can’t always make up for horrendous scripts.
