After Hours
Before watching the movie, a man working at the cinema did a little presentation of the movie, which i thought was very interesting. Now, let me tell you why i liked this movie :
- the dark and perilous atmosphere of new york at night.
the whole movie was shot at night, even the scenes that took place in closed room. It really succeded in giving the impression that Paul was trapped in this infinite perilous night. The dark atmosphere was also ideal as we felt the anxiety rising and the weird events accumulating. It’s also
interesting to know that Scorsese forbid Griffin Dunne to sleep during the making of the movie, which made him look sort of stunned, going perfectly with the fact he was awoken for a whole night.
- The protagonist who we can identify to
Paul can be described as an « everyman ». We can easily identify to his caracter, from his expectations to his clumsiness and mistakes. But it’s true that after a while I found his choices really bizarre: why would you follow a random woman offering you to go in her icecream truck ? Have you not seen the minions ? 😭
- Absurd comedy
Really move the humour of this movie. The situation were really unusual, and how they ended up always finishing wrong was very fun : a wise use of the repeat comedy. The dialogues were also fun, i laughed at how the metro guy explained why he couldn’t offer Paul a price reduction.
- As the man who did the movie’s introduction explained, the movie never « stops » and the camera is almost always in movement. The fix plans are really rare, and this gave me an even stronger impression that this adventure was never gonna stop. It also makes you feel like you are in a dream.
Even though this movie is not Scorsese’s most famous piece, and not an ideal example of it’s usual style, it is really a movie that I took pleasure watching, because of the reasons i said earlier. This is my first long review, I hope that everything is clear and that there aren’t any mistakes.
