A Clockwork Orange
"Initiative comes to thems that wait."
Once I got through the devilish first act of this film, I was able to let myself enjoy it. lol. But on a more serious note, although it was hard to watch at times, I did appreciate the first act. I was mesmerized and impressed by the world the film took place in, the quirks of the language, the vibrant colors and the unique (and grotesque) fashion. The world-building was truly done in such a perfectly disturbing and weird way that I was really sad when we sort of lost that aspect of the film, moving forward. ( I truly just could not get enough of this new universe we were in). However we did return to it in the end so all is well. Alex was a very complex character with many faces, I struggled to identify what kind of person he was, especially how intelligent he was (if that makes sense). The switch-up from his ridiculous and childish personality to a much more calculating and presentable one left me wondering if being childish and ruthless was more of deliberate choice of his to not care for others rather than a lack of the ability to act right and empathize.I also really appreciated the sets of the movie, (the houses, the streets, the prison and particularly the milk bar), and it was also very well shot and paced that there is not much I find to say about it. That being said, I do want to go back on the first act, to say that I found some of the sexually violent elements to be unnecessarily long and explicit at times, and I do understand that it might have been for the shock factor that contributed not only to the setting but also to the radicalization of the characters and to the overall meaning of the film, but I do think that it tended to be too much.It is definitely a very unique and heavy film, it leaves you thinking, about the government, about the carceral system, and about redemption and punishment.
