Waves
For me this is one of cinema’s finest play on visuals ever. There was not one single scene where I wasn’t amazed by how the colours were used to convey emotion. It’s such a vibrant movie that I could rewatch it without any sound and I’d still be enjoying my time.
Talking about sound, let’s talk about this soundtrack. This was peak music with great artists and the songs matched really well with this « young adult trying to figure out what to do with their lives » vibe. The original soundtrack, from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross was just perfect for moments of tension, it made you feel heavy but at the same time floating in all this stress and chaos. The combination of visuals and great melodies makes this movie a transcending experience that you will need to watch.
For the plot, I liked the idea that it switches the main character halfway through, it really gives another perspective of the dynamic in the family that helps you truly make up your mind about the family and for example whether the dad is actually bad or not. Talking about the dad, this motherfucker made me cry with his « he’s not a monster » bullshit and after that, the tears wouldn’t go away since the following scenes are just as emotionally charged. That’s probably why I gave this a 5⭐️ instead of a 4.5 or 4, there are some movies that simply amaze/impress you but they don’t always manage to create this emotional link to you, this one did and wow.
I haven’t finished Cuaron’s Roma (that I’m sure I’ll love), and I haven’t watched The Green Book yet I’m still convinced that Waves could’ve had some nominations in this 91st Oscar ceremony (I hope I’m not mistaking the year that I could’ve been nominated) because I’ve rarely seen this kind of movie.
Great experience.
