Bones and All
“I want you to eat me, Maren. I want you to love and eat me.”
This is love in its most raw and pure form. Lee and Maren stumble upon each other at their very lowest and find the best in themselves when they’re together, eventually becoming one in the end.
I love this movie. Not just because horror is my favorite genre but because of how aesthetically and visually beautiful it is. The lgbtq undertones and themes speak so loudly through our main characters despite them being in a straight relationship. The scene where Lee and Maren listen to the last of her fathers tapes where he basically tells her to pray for her to “get better” is especially telling, it’s also where Lee tells Maren that she can’t do that, she was born this way and that’s ok, she has to live the lifestyle she does and that’s not her fault.
“You wanna be people? Let’s be people.”
Maren finds it very difficult to live with herself but eventually comes to terms with and accepts who she is and the fact that she cannot change that. They’re outcasts in society but they find safety and home within each other.
Both Lee and Maren end up living a normal life (for at least a little while) before the end of the film which leads to their final act of love and acceptance.
