Perfect Blue
"What? This isn't true. I didn't write this."
This film starts as a “reinvent yourself” type of story and slowly turns into a “don’t look in the mirror for a while” story. The scariest part is how polite the loss of identity is. Just the quiet horror of not recognizing the person doing your daily routine. That hit a little too close to home in the way changing goals, hobbies, or even your aesthetic somehow makes you feel like you’ve betrayed a past version of yourself.
Also the way it uses repetition made me feel like I was the one stuck in the loop. By the end I was asking myself which version of me is watching this.
Atmospherically unsettling J-pop carried.
