C'mon C'mon
This movie right here? This shit is special. It’s so uniquely human. It’s beautiful, both physically and emotionally. I found myself crying at multiple points (when he reads Star Child? Balling like a baby). This movie feels raw. There’s no real conflict, or thing that the characters must overcome. It’s just life, and it’s trials and tribulations. It’s about connecting, and communicating as you navigate this world. I’m just really in awe of this one. I wasn’t expecting it to be this way. Here I am, 30 minutes removed from leaving the theater, crying in the parking lot. The journey that we see Jesse and Johnny take strikes a lot of chords. One for me is that throughout the whole movie, Jesse just wants to be understood. He wants someone to hear him, and get him without being told directly what he needs. Johnny does that. He sees Jesse for who he is, and though he struggles at first, he figures it out along the way. My grandfather did that for me, and as we approach the 2 year anniversary of his passing, it drums up a lot of grief and sadness in me. One thing the movie does that I think is just great is cutting in real interview clips with the script, it’s a great way to fill space and makes everything feel more authentic. The sound design is out of this world, and I think it should definitely take the Oscar home for it. Joaquin Phoenix and Woody Norman are fantastic together. Their relationship is the highlight of the movie. Wasn’t expecting Jaboukie to show up, but always love seeing him in things. The choice to have the movie in black and white was a good one, I think it made it so that you didn’t get distracted by what was on screen, vs what you were hearing. That’s what this whole things about, listening. It’s just a wonderful, magical, heartfelt film. This will stick with me for a while.
