Obsession
i liked this movie so much that i literally had to sit with my thoughts for a whole day before writing this review because i genuinely didn’t know where to start 😭
this movie is disturbing in so many ways, but what stuck with me the most was nikki. INDE NAVARRETTE was INSANE. there were so many moments where you could actually see the real nikki trying to break through underneath everything that was happening to her. she barely had to say anything and yet you could feel every bit of confusion and fear. and don’t even get me started on that FINAL SCENE. so much emotion packed into those cries alone !!! it felt raw in a way that made me uncomfortable to watch, but that’s exactly why it worked.
what makes this movie even more upsetting is how real its themes feel. underneath all the horror, it felt like a commentary on the way some men become obsessed with the idea of a woman and what she could be rather than who she actually is. they love the potential they see in her. they want access to her and ownership over her. but when they’re denied that access, they feel entitled to take it anyway.
the movie shows how far that entitlement can go. violating someone’s body, stripping away their autonomy, treating them like an object rather than a person. and then when the consequences of those actions start catching up to them, suddenly they don’t want any part of it. they want the reward without the responsibility.
that’s why i felt absolutely zero sympathy for bear, every horrible thing that happened to him felt like the direct result of his own choices. nikki didn’t deserve any of it just because she said no.
this movie got under my skin. it’s horrifying, but not in a way that feels distant. the horror comes from the fact that some people see a woman’s boundaries as a challenge instead of something that deserves to be respected.
this movie made me sick and i mean that as a compliment.
