Right after watching the film, I didn’t know what to think about it. A part of me loved it, from the most beautiful cinematography I’ve ever seen to the gentle Western music in the background. But another part of me just didn’t understand it: Travis truly is a bad trashy guy. So I read some reviews to organize my thoughts. It confused me even more. Both the one star and four star reviews sounded reasonable to me. And that, perhaps, is what makes this film so great for me.
I don’t think the film tries to glorify or justify Travis’ actions in any way. They are just trying to illuminate a man who is trying to reconcile with his terrible past. The methods he uses, such as taking Hunter away without prior notice, is wrong. But I get where he’s coming from. He’s just a man trying to undo his sins. And just for the fact that this film shines light on a perspective I’ve never really thought of before, I think it’s worth commending.
To be honest, I think my young age and lack of experience, especially in terms of love, limits the scope of interpretation I can have. So I wish to rewatch this later in life and reorganize how I feel.
I know this review’s all over the place and all but the point I wanna make is that this is a film worth watching, regardless of if you’ll like it or not.
