Paris Is Burning
“we are the greatest example of behavioral modification in the history of civilization. we have had everything taken away from us, and yet we have all learned how to survive”
WOW. what an incredible documentary, the rich, unique and powerful history in black gay culture continues to astound me and this piece is no exception. the strength and passion in each and every person in this doc gives me faith in humanity. the issues being covered by white america in the past 10 years have been deconstructed, reworked and in open dialogue in poc communities for DECADES, this is just more proof of the fact that our society will continue to improve the more we appreciate and put front and center stories just like paris is burning.
i also have to call out and appreciate the discussions of class in this piece. wealth and the accumulation of material things in our society has greatly squandered the creativity and beauty of the richness of culture, especially in a decade like the 80s where opulence was sold to us like pet food is to animals, expecting us to gobble up “the names on the tags”. any docu that can exemplify that notion with the grace this one does deserves MAJOR props.
rest in beauty venus, my heart goes out to every woman who has has to go through that travesty and horror.
