Deep Red
a reccommendation from hideo kojima himself and one that changed my life for the better, here comes: 70s giallo "slasher" film with a soundtrack that can only be described as dracula or halloween in the style of italo disco and a deep, heavy bassline that made my ass SHAKE. presenting: toxic friends to enemies yaoi, a cute twink, and two of the cuntiest women you'll ever see in a movie with eyeliner FOR DAYSSSS.
Profondo Rosso is in every way a masterpiece. The movie feels fresh, new, because I assume the innovations it made for the world of cinema with the risky decisions it took at times regarding camera work or sound design were indeed revolutionary.
in the narrative, the movie mocks you and laughs in your face. it tells you who the killer is, then it /doesn't./ then it tells you it definitely is this person, but then... it is! and hah, you fool, it actually also is the person we said it wasn't from the very start! it keeps you on the edge of your seat with paranoia. teasing you constantly with the use of eyeliner in certain characters as a red herring, aswell as camera angles to play with your belief of what is true and what's not.
I'm not a sound design expert, but I think it was magnificient how the movie constantly jumped from absolute silence to enough noise to hurt your ears, and it feels like a very purposeful decision rather than a budget and technology issue, it kept my adrenaline and interest pumping high without knowing what to expect, equally scared against the use of sound and silence (mostly, in the use of sound.)
marco and carlo where definitely the original doomed yaoi pairing and gianna was very revolver ocelot coded.
ciao.
