BlacKkKlansman
LOVE. THIS.
The humour, political messages and that distinctive Spike Lee style has got me in that sweet balance of full on adoration for this film and rage for everything else.
Honestly, this might be one of my favourite films of the year. The plot is so riveting that it barely felt like two hours. The film stresses you out, makes you laugh and makes you fucking angry at the right times, letting you breathe in and out.
I adore that sexy, flirtatious dialogue that Lee writes it's so beautiful and flows wonderfully with the help of such charismatic leads as Laura Harrier and John David Washington. The two long scene speeches that are given to the Black Student Union are absolutely awe-inspiring, not to mention the cinematography - beautiful portraits of audience members surrounded by darkness in the first speech and the contrast between the BSU and the Klan meeting in the second one.....
That line where Flip (Adam Driver) says that he didn't think of himself as Jewish growing up but since the investigation he can't stop thinking about it has stayed in my brain! I love the importance of cultural heritage and background and Lee switches between the black and jewish perspectives so fluidly is just a testament to Spike Lee's writing.
I'm doing a Spike Lee deep-dive rewatch soon because mamma mia I love it.
