Solid first act, slightly uninteresting second act, all timer third act. Great movie, this Kurosawa guy seems pretty good at pointing a camera at things.

I’ve watched about 300 movies since the first time I saw the grand Budapest hotel, and if I’m being honest with myself, there have been a handful of films that have come close to reaching my love for this one. The master, days of heaven, my neighbor totoro, and good time are all films that I hold very close to myself, and maybe on some days, I’d call one of them “my favourite movie”. But even on my seven rewatches, as I’ve failed to recapture the overwhelming joy I felt when I saw it for the first time two years ago, I still can’t think of a film that I hold closer than the grand Budapest hotel. I’ll probably have a new favourite movie a few years down the line, but in my mind, that’s irrelevant. This will always be the film that sparked my obsessive love of cinema (as pretentious as that sounds) and I’ll always have the memory of scrolling through Disney plus at 6am on a school morning, and pressing play on this random film I liked the poster of, accidentally stumbling into the greatest thing I’d ever seen.
