Sentimental Value
the last scene with the sisters was so beautiful it moved me to tears.
when i was younger i wanted an older sister who would care for me as i cared for my younger brothers, as i thought that was an older sister’s role. perhaps because she’s the oldest, or simply because she’s a girl. i don’t know really what i’m getting at, but i guess this film made me think about how that’s not really true; that sometimes the youngest really does care for the oldest when they’re struggling, and that’s okay. it’s just a different sibling dynamic that i’m not at all used to, so it was very striking to me.
i found renate’s character to be so deeply relatable, just holding such a profound sadness with seemingly no where to go. all of the characters are such beautifully written and portrayed so well. i believe they should each win an oscar for this genuinely.
