Frankenstein
This film is a 3 course feast.
The entree: Visually this is stunning movie that blends Victorian era extravagance and the popping of colour with the surreal beauty that can be found simply in your everyday forest, while also having our characters drive the visuals. The madness that befalls the characters is represented in not only how they dress but really the world around them.
The main course: The story of Mary Shelly’s book is a classic and a beloved story, and Guillermo didn’t break or cut anything. In this 2 and a half hour epic we follow the stories of many characters most importantly Mr. Frankenstein himself but every character in this movie feels alive and carries so much depth. And there are some really stand out performances in this as well. I’ll say I was sceptical at first of Jacob Elordi’s casting but it turns out he may have been my favourite performance in this movie. And despite its lengthy runtime it’s paced so well. It’s never dull and you have a really memorable scene every other scene, I can’t guarantee you will not be broad.
Dessert: The cherry on top to this fantastic movie is the writing and dialogue is great, it’s witty it’s funny sometimes and at others it’s heartbreaking.
This film is packed with style but also holds so much variety in genre, it’s a horrific love story, ridiculous soap opera, and gory comedy. And yet it never feels like a mess. It’s Guillermo’s unfiltered and unrestricted vision of a classic. As a whole this movie makes you care. Plain and simply makes you care about what’s going on and to who it’s happening. I love this movie and was an awesome experience. Highly recommend.
