Fuck spiders and fuck sexual infidelity.
I have never seen a film which has such an open meaning to interpretation, and yet despite the fact I am not one for artsy films that try and leave everything down to the audience's imagination (looking at you, David Lynch), there is something about this which has truly shook me to my core.
The more I think about this film and the more I read about it the more perplexed yet fascinated by every particular detail, ranging from the Roman Fascists on the wall, the giant ass spider over the city or what his mum meant when she said:
"You should drop that dream about becoming a third-rate movie actor".
Gyllenhaal is once again, absolutely incredible. Villeneuve goes the opposite route to standard psychological thrillers by not having a 10 minute explanation scene, and I am surprisingly grateful for this. As much as those kind of scenes satisfy my brain, I feel like this lack of an explanation allows me to get lost in the film.
All in all, I was gobsmacked by how good this was.
