Cowboy Bebop
what i loved about the Cowboy Bebop the most is the existentialism’s question encapsulated in the plot
the whole series all characters are trying to choose between their past (bad faith) and the present (their crew) In the end, ed actually finds her home in the past and leaves the crew. Faye tries to figure out her past, but understands that it doesnt really matter as shes happiest with spike Therefore, she overcomes Sartre's bad faith (sort of) and lives in the present
However, there is spike, whose consciousness is literally the event of nothing between the past and future as his left eye sees the past and the right one sees the future (SARTRE) The whole series spike is torn between choosing his past (Julia) or present (faye), The death of Julia makes him realize that the past is almost like a bad dream, so it does not matter and the true self is the present one, so in that final dialogue with faye spike tells her that he needs to deal with his past (defeat vicious) in order to move on (live with faye). In the last shot after killing vicious spike has only the right eye opened, symbolizing how now he is ready to freely live in the present. However, we are left with an open ending (whether spike died) so it is up to us to decide whether true self is the present one or the past. I would agree with existentialism that suggests that spike survived and started freely living escaping his past
I loved this show, definitely one of the best anime series ever
