Enter the Void
The only film that always makes me cry.
Discovering cinema for the first time, Gaspar Noe left an immediate and lasting impression with his unique and transgressive style that influenced my tatse a lot. He remains one of my fav directors to this day.
In my opinion, Enter the Void is his magnum opus. In the same way David Lynch's most radical and personal work, Enter the Void feels like the most compldx and ambitious film.
Its 2:41 runtime may seem excessive, but its fully justified for me. The narrative feels like a lucid dream. The experimentation that includes long shots and pov shots make this film inaccessible for many. However, if ur drawn to experimental cinema, this is required watching.
How does this film make me feel? No idea how to describe it. But i cry every time i watch it. The car crash scene ia particularly hard to watch. Not because of the event itself, but because of the emotional dislocation. Emotionally very painful. Like going through a child trauma or confronting something buried. Does any other film evoke such emotions? Not at all. Not even close. No other film tapped into those feelings for me.
Besides the emotiinal impact, the film is also an existential meditation on themes of emptiness, rebirth, and the cycle of our lives. Every rewatch reveals new meanings and symbols. The plot can be interpreted absolutely different. Spoiler: it can all be oscar's death-induced dream as he was so impressed by the book. Or the ending suggests that oscars trapped ina cyclical life that is a void and doesnt have any meaning.
Overall, its a strange challenging and haunting film that offers both a cinematic experience and a phylosophical puzzle to explore. Enter the Void changed not only my tatse, but also my worldview.
