Weapons
Maybe a script is worth $38 million
Creggers is certainly becoming an integral part of modern horror. Whilst I think Peele would have smashed this out of the park also, I think Creggers directorial style shines brighter here than Peeles would have (I’d have also fired my management team over “Weapons”).
There’s beautiful camera work across the entire film but particular sequences such as the chase between Justine and Marcus highlight Creggers immense talent in tension building.
Whilst the intertwining of stories is largely paid off and successful in the middle section of the film, I appreciate the flow and engagement that it grants.
It’s obvious but the script genuinely is great, which is lovely to see in a horror movie as this rarely occurs as of late. Surprisingly more funny than I imagined? You’ll get genuine laughs out of this and it doesn’t feel too out of place to me.
I think there’s a clear allegory for school shootings across the stories central narrative. Other than the blimp sized AR, it’s pretty niche and can be interpretation certainly. I’m gonna go on a tangent but I visualise a lot of details to symbolise this message.
The time 2:17 could represent the time it takes to lose a class of kids to a tragedy. 217 could symbolise the bullets used. 2/17 is the survivors of said class to the dead etc…
There’s something to be said about Gladys for sure and who or what she may represent. Possibly posing as the embodiment of US governmental authority ‘allowing’ these tragedies to occur. She’s rather absent for a lot of the film but appears enough to remember. Suggesting acknowledgements in government to pose as ‘help’ but behind the scenes they’re ultimately allowing all of this to happen.
Many many other suggestions I’m sure.
This is $38 million.
Labelling the final 15 minutes or so batshit would certainly be an understatement. I think the final ‘hunt’ could be viewed in very opposing ways but I loved every moment of it, so i understand if it isn’t to everyone’s taste.
Speaking of, the special effects are fantastic across the board and definitely shine brightest during the (dis) embodiment of gore.
This guy made “Barbarian” so I should not be surprised.
Performances are at the very least great across everyone involved. Garner gives a beautifully realistic performance, and I loved seeing the contrast in her talent after just rewatching “Fantastic Four” the other week. Brolins also great and I saw in an interview that being a father himself impacted his performance in this which you can certainly tell in moments.
With Cregger touching on past trauma and experiences along the sudden death of his friend, it’s clear the impact that a film like this can have on individuals.
There was a few moments that lulled for me personally but these were pretty far and few with one another. However with the grand success of tonal shifts across the entire film and an abundance of talent across every realm, I don’t care.
I kind of wish it was even more mysterious and deep in all honesty but this film doesn’t make me wish that much more than it presents.
Is that my goat Justin Long?
