Dogtooth
yorgos really likes to have one character who is omnipotently in charge of what the other characters do. i do really appreciate how transactional he expresses conversations. it makes the story more interesting in an odd and uncomfortable way. the cinematography in all of his films is breathtaking.
the dog adoption scene was so harrowing. the staff says that owning a well bred dog will do anything for him. no questions. the staff even emphasized that. and father (christos stergioglou) just brushes past the staff’s whole speech because he already has humans as pets. all for the dog, a ‘lesser being’, to not give a fuck about him. very cool and shocking way to express that image. i love it.
incredible needle drop during the marco polo scene. i love how it portrays the focus the children have. then shockingly gross scene next. jesus christ what is happening? mouth agape for the rest of this. my god what a weird twist.
i felt like i was going manic with angeliki papoulia in the bathroom hammer all the way to the trunk scene. shit made my heart race. the film is very well acted, so much so that i was cringing at how this story unravels. i will say this had me on the edge of my seat and in my head trying to find out if i should turn it off and go to bed. it got me in the end. from that point i was watching a car wreck and couldn’t look away until i knew the outcome, even though i knew it would be brutal.
basically what happens if you have a family and never introduce them to basically anything but erotomania for their controller/father. very well acted, i can’t imagine reading the script and saying yes i will commit to that.
