why are you motherfuckers lying this was not that great 😭 ill paste my twitter rant here: ok i do have things to say but to make a long stry short, sle had a lot of potential but it felt pretentious and relied so much on the cyber horror aspect to get away with not making any sense at some points, i mean shoutout for using a concept ahead of its time for sure but the episodes felt like a drag to watch which is something that a lot of this genre of shows struggles with as well as the excessive use of in-world technical terminology that doesnt really do anything other than confuse the watcher (ie ergo proxy, end of eva) i think you could cut a lot of episodes in half and still get the same result, it was ambitious with its concept but it failed to deliver in the emotional sense, while lain is an endearing main character i felt that for the amount of time we saw her interact with others for example arisu, didnt really build up enough emotionally so that the ending could be a lot more hard hitting (think madoka magica, similar ending but much more emotionally impactful) i do love the artstyle, sound and overall aesthetic (?) i just think it wasnt used effectively enough or to their advantage, again i think the theme of fear of oblivion over death through the inevitability of erasing ones projection/image through the internet is really smart, ahead of its time and ambitious, i just wish it had a more impactful way of saying that. banger op though!!
