Saw
60/100
Saw has moments where you can see a better movie trying to break through. The core setup, two men trapped in a grimy bathroom, forced to confront their pasts while a mysterious killer plays puppet master—has real potential. Some of the tension in that single location works, and there are flashes of creative, claustrophobic horror that hint at what this could have been.
But too often, the film leans into horror movie logic that undermines its own stakes. Characters make baffling decisions, the dialogue is stilted, and the plot twists rely more on shock than actual intrigue. The camera work is especially jarring, over-edited, disorienting, and often more distracting than effective. Instead of building suspense, it feels like it’s trying to cover up the rough edges.
There’s fun to be had if you’re in the mood for something grimy and over-the-top, but Saw never quite lives up to its premise. It’s not without moments, but it squanders the chance to be something smarter or more psychologically intense.
