Irma Vep
Maggie Cheung brought this cinematic experience to Irma Vep, her (Irma Vep) spirit is always with the film and to whom brings it to life. Watching the show progress felt like looking at a mirage, I definitely think they captured Irma Vep at her core. But watching Mira’s arc, especially her with her romantic interests, felt a lot like queerbating - with the trailer and promos promoting her and Laurie very strongly to her saying in the last episode (The Terrible Wedding) how she’s not queer at all and may only have felt feelings for Laurie and her alone?? It didn’t feel right just watching that episode, because how could they just cheap out Regina’s lines when from the beginning she talks of film as this magic that captures its audience and fighting film as art? And all the while René and Mira have this wonder talking of film and the essence and spirit that is Irma Vep. It felt a whole lot different watching episodes 1 - 7 from episode 8.
But it is from a24 so I really don’t know what to feel about it.
