American Psycho
THIS IS THE SHIT I LIKE!
First of all, I can't believe Patrick used a Jean-Paul Gaultier bag to dispose of a body. Very material gworl of him.
This movie is sardonic, slick to the point of being greasy, and satirical. Aided by the fucking superb acting and immersive score, the movie criticizes the overly materialistic and downright shallow world of 1980s Wall Street. The criticism carries over to the modern-day as well. The iconic business card scene and Bateman's infatuation with mirrors and "bettering himself", the constant mixing-up of people because they all dress, talk, and work the same - these are all indications to the sheer vapidness of the world in which Bateman resides. I was left with questions about Bateman's existence and whether he actually murdered Paul Allen or not.
I also felt like the film showed the actual mediocrity of these upper-class, privileged men who feel that they're superior in terms of taste and intellect. Even in the film, these men, including Patrick, are easily replaceable, an army of clones ready to replace them at any given minute, Hence, Bateman's obsession with being the best- having the best business card, physique, whatever.
He kills to feel something. In his artificial world, where nothing holds any true, raw meaning, his mind turned to this violent way to feel any sort of humanity at all. The people around him ignore his random psychopathic outbursts because they're incapable of taking anything seriously. As one person here pointed out, even Bateman's incredible musical knowledge is surface-level, he doesn't truly embody the meaning or the emotions of the music.
The more I write about this movie, the more I want to. There seems to be no shortage of metaphors and theories that can be drawn for this movie and, for me, therein lies its beauty. The best movies are the ones that make me think a little more deeply and make me want to keep drawing conclusions long after the movie has ended. Maybe i am not making much sense right now, my brain is a little scrambled. I just want to say that this is a masterpiece of a movie and one that deserves all your undivided attention and maybe even a second watch.
Now you must excuse me, I have to return some video tapes.
