Jojo Rabbit
that shoe scene is devastating what the fuck
I really liked how they focused on just one boy who's so indoctrinated and filled with propaganda that despite being 10 he's "a nazi". Hitler was obviously a metaphor(?) for Jojo's nazism/patriotism and his change from close confidant to evil hate espousing dictator is in line with how Jojo's attitude changes. I also like how ScarJo's death wasn't the catalyst for everything but rather meeting Elsa was because that was the first time he actually ever met a jew because, again, he's 10. I saw in another review how things seemed silly or out of proportion because it's from the perspective of Jojo which makes sense. After all, at 10 you can't really handle the enormity of a world war or anything else. I think it was a really refreshing take on how nazism and propaganda worked. they didn't try to make a grand-scale, gritty, dark movie about the state of Germany in the war or make it something serious and so difficult to watch even though the subject matter required depth and nuance. It was simply the story of a 10-year-old boy who lived in Nazi Germany. I'm sure there actually were (and are) so many Jojo's who don't understand a thing of what they're saying or the impact they can have and only say what they say and do what they do because authority figures around them are doing so. Very touching movie and I love Taika Watiti.
