Autumn Sonata
I just finished my first experience with director Bergman, and honestly I’m really glad I started with this particular film.
The movie is unbelievably emotional, exploring the distortion of a woman’s life cycle and the way we experience life through a mother.
Often, women sacrifice their dreams, ambitions, and art to give their children a chance، and then the children go through the same.
The relationship between Eva and Charlotte is inverted and twisted. Usually, the mother sacrifices, but here it’s the daughter. Charlotte abandoned her motherhood to focus on her art, which made her heart cold and harsh toward her daughters. Eva, on the other hand, sacrificed her own dreams and even became almost like a mother to her mother, all to gain her attention and care ، but it never happened, because Charlotte was always absorbed in herself and her relationships.
The film takes us on a cathartic journey for Charlotte through Eva, as she begins to grasp the extent of the pain she caused her daughters and even herself.
Honestly, the film is warm, moving, and remarkable, the kind that leaves an impression from the very first watch.
