The General
Ok, where to begin. I will always and forever love most Buster Keaton films. His movies are my favorite outta the big three from the era. His characters are always so charming and the storytelling is engaging.
In his movies there have been a severe lack of good representation, and flat out racism (like blackface or confederate propaganda) In my opinion, and just for the record this is NOT and I repeat NOT an excuse, but he was just your average guy from that time period. He was really more or less racist than the next white guy during that time. Should he have done better and actually been practicing anti racism, yes. Can we really do anything about that now, no. He also had relationships with much younger women (but so did Chaplin) however I have noticed that the leading women in Busters films usually have autonomy and a personality (the bare minimum) but still, for the time, I was happily surprised
Overall, I really appreciate Keaton’s creativity and passion for his art. I mean, he could’ve died a million different ways during the stints he pulled in this. (Also as an Oregonian I love that this movie was filmed here) I have similar feelings when watching anything that Weinstein produced or woody Allen directed. Separate the art from the artists, but I do acknowledge that is easier said then done.
