A24 didn’t disappoint me once again. creating a literal scary haunted house experience to watch on your screen.
As a horror fan, I rarely admit that a movie was scary, but yeah i have to give that title to this one. The acting was incredible, the concept was interesting, and the use of sound, basically the core of the whole movie, was done perfectly. The ending left me with mixed feelings at first. I didn’t really know what to think, and I thought it might lower my overall rating. But after reading some fan theories, I started to understand just how clever that creative choice really was.
“*Don’t be afraid of the dark, be afraid of the silence*.”
The entire film builds around sound, and the ending strips everything down to just that, leaving a lot open to interpretation. And the thing is, with sound alone, you can’t arrive at one clear version of what actually happened. Even now, I’m not sure what to think, and I’m okay with that. I don’t think it’s a movie that needs a single “correct” explanation, you just have to accept the ending as it is. That’s where its brilliance lies. Maybe I’ll change my mind once the next films in the planned trilogy come out, but for now, I see this as a true masterpiece of horror.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I actually shouted at a film.
