Parasite
The first time I watched this movie, I understood the title 'Parasite' to be in reference to the family's relationship to the house. Watching it again I feel the title alludes to the relationship capitalism has to the characters in the film and Korean society as a whole. When watching this film I found myself with the questions "What does capitalism take from us?", "How does capitalism distort identity?" and "What does this film mean for Korea?". I think it is not a stretch to say this is not a Korean film, but it is a film about Korea. Hyper-capitalism post Korean War due to foreign influence has contributed to a deep class divide, a consumerist culture, and the loss of language and cultural practices. The family that lives in the main house exemplifies the way capitalism distorts identity. They are a Korean family, that studies and speaks English, eats Korean-fusion food, and hosts an "American-Indian" party with a Japanese table arrangement. Lowk this review is getting too long so I am not going to finish my thoughts just know they were profound and interesting!
