Bad Lieutenant
“I’m not an asshole. I’m a cop!”
While before getting shot in the end, the person yelled “Hey, cop!” from the other car. It was never about the whole job title ‘cop’, it was about identity and pride. He used his badge in order to take advantage of those two young girls in the car since he knows that people fear him, and he feeds onto that fear.
The movie was beautifully written and it had a very strong effect on me. The church scene where the lieutenant meets the nun, asking her how could she forgive those two men that brutally raped her and how he then yelled at the imaginary ‘Jesus’ “where were you?” as if in a way to ask him “where were you when I was suffering?” or “where were you when I was doing all of those bad things?”.
The forgiveness part of the nun was possibly the reason why he then let the two rapists free. Because bringing justice won’t do anything since the nun had willingly forgave them, or maybe because he was trying to do the same thing. Either way, letting them go on that bus was a mistake.
The lieutenant himself seemed to be engulfed by his own guilt in that church scene, being completely aware of what he was doing. I think that’s why it had such a huge impact on me.
