retro is a film that tries to cover a lot of themes -- casteism, parental trauma, romantic love, anger, violence, its aftermath, heartbreak, yearning, oppression, cults, the concept of a 'chosen one', ... -- but unfortunately does a pretty messy job at it. KaSu is famously known for his tonal shifts and genre blending but in his past ventures he handled their themes in a comparatively neater way, depth aside. but honestly despite this very apparent flaw, what can i say? i see the vision and i really appreciate it for that. i love me an unconventional and stylishly made film that dares to dream big and be different. when it works, it works terrificly. otherwise, it's at least not a bore. technically brilliant as expected, with great performances and music. could've used much better writing and editing but overall i liked this. wish i could say more than this but that's it for now.

i'll just say it: last year's varisu and this year's the greatest of all time have proven one thing -- none of you know how to sit back and enjoy a borderline ridiculous yet gloriously campy anna film for once in your lives. shoutout to the people out there like me who truly do get it though. 🐿️
