Burning
Surprisingly reminded me a lot of The Prestige, with its themes of obsession, rivalry, and the fact that the whole movie is a multi-solution puzzle for the audience to piece together.
I was blown away by Steven Yeun. Every yawn, smile, and blink communicates the effortless and intangible. Aside from Ledger’s Joker, this has to be my top supporting actor performance.
Framing through the lens of not necessarily an “unreliable narrator” but rather an unintelligent, paranoid one is genius. It adds so much nuance to a story already sunken with depth. It did for me what Parasite and High and Low couldn’t, better-personifying class tensions in a more intriguing and subtle way, all while supporting a layered narrative in which each interpretation lingers and morphs like an abstract nesting doll
