Adaptation.
Susan Orlean: "There are too many ideas and things and people. Too many directions to go. I was starting to believe the reason it matters to care passionately about something, is that it whittles the world down to a more manageable size."
My third Spike Jonze and fourth Charlie Kaufman film and phew... I haven't related to something this much ever before. The only question on my mind is: How the fuck does a so-personal story about the writer feel so personal to an audience member like me. Oh and this movie was supposed to be just an adaptation of The Orchid Thief, instead it became one of the most original adapted screenplays of all time.
Adaptation is a comedy-drama that follows the struggles and insecurities of Charlie Kaufman who is tasked with writing an adaptation of Susan Orlean's book The Orchid Thief. Now, let me just say it... this movie is a masterpiece for me. This movie was supposed to be an adaptation, it became a movie about the writer trying to adapt the adaptation. AND THIS DUDE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A WRITER'S BLOCK. The movie is very meta throughout its runtime. I can think of countless instances where what is said in the movie is going on in the movie - Donald suggesting that Susan and Leroche fall in love ... it happens; Donald asking Charlie to find his originality in his genre... well the movie itself is the example of it; Mckee suggesting to wow the audience with the third act... exactly what happens. This is fucking brilliant writing.
The casting choice and the performances of the cast are fantastic. I don't particularly like Nicolas Cage however he nailed it. Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper nail their parts as well. Everything about the production- direction, cinematography, pacing, runtime, editing, colors, dialog, story, emotion, humor, themes, ending, visual effects as well as score- are fantastic.
This is one movie everyone should watch. Such originality. Such great insight. Treat.
