i don’t know if this is a 3.5 or a 4, but i still really liked it. the cinematography, the soundtrack, the dialogue… everything about this movie felt so comforting. 🥹 now i want to own a house in italy and spend every summer there. manifesting that life as we speak. i just want to say that the way elio treated marzia foreshadowed how oliver treated elio. in both cases, there was one person who loved and one who lusted. elio was using marzia in the same way oliver was using him. i know some people may think oliver loved elio, but in my eyes, oliver was giving himself one summer to chase his true desires because the situation worked in his favour. he’s older and more experienced, while elio is still a teenager who’s discovering his sexuality and trying to understand his feelings. to me, that’s what makes the power imbalance between them so difficult to ignore. oliver repeatedly tries to create distance between himself and elio, yet he still chooses to pursue a relationship with him even though he knew it would hurt him in the end. to me, it felt like he knew he was never going to choose elio. it didn’t feel like genuine love. it felt like he decided to be selfish, and the cost was a young boy who ended up falling deeply for him. oh, marzia. you’re such a beautiful and emotionally intelligent soul. i strive to be as mature as you someday. i also think marzia deserved better, and so did elio. p.s. that peach is probably traumatized.
