My Dinner with Andre
This Movie features in my list of films I've known about for a long time and knew I'd love but for some inexplainable reason never watched, but after a conversation with a friend in a pub the night before during which he berated me for having never seen it I decided it was finally time. And I can safely say that I am stupid for never watching it earlier.
I'll admit that the just under two hour runtime worried me slightly because although I do enjoy movies in which the plot comes second place to the dialogue and characters, the films in that camp typically have the characters moving around and have slight gaps in time to allow the conversations to change when the point has been reached e.g. The Before Trilogy. However, I don't think this movie would work if that was the case it relies on the fact that Wally can't get up or suddenly switch the topic of conversation forcing him to listen to Andre's tenuous links between anecdotes and eccentric ramblings. Many times throughout this film I was reminded of situations where friends and I are perhaps feeling a bit introspective and went on a nonsensical ramble about a thought we'd had or something we'd read whilst the others tried to make sense of what was being said. I could see myself rather a lot in both Wally and Andre, however I feel like Wally's life goal to have a quiet life, reading near his partner, doing his errands and if he can occasionally get some work through his talent then he's happy is pretty much exactly what I want from life. Although I feel that in some sort of dark fantasy I wish I was Andre with his globetrotting tales of Poland and Tibet despite knowing deep down I would detest most of the situations he found himself In.
However if I had to pick a favourite aspect of this practically perfect movie it would be that at 1:28:54 Wallace Shawn says 'Inconceivable'.
