Jaws
You're gonna need a bigger boat.Jaws, the original summer blockbuster that also singlehandedly made a whole generation afraid of sharks.
The film uses a fantastic method of withdrawing the image of the shark for as long as possible, building the suspense and enlarging your reaction for when he is finally shown.
The first half of the movie is considerably slower than the rest for that reason, but it does a decent job at introducing us to the characters, their personalities, and to the situation at hand.
And it was really frustrating at times; for example, when the grieving mother of the boy tells Brody he's responsible for the accident, I was screaming in my head, "NO! You dummy, it's the mayor's fault."
Speaking of which, the mayor was a major bitch in that part of the film.
But both of these aren't flaws of the film, quite the opposite. It portrays the characters in such a good way; you get genuinely frustrated with them.
The second half of the movie, though, is a masterpiece. It elevates the whole concept with an epic, continuous saga of the lead characters trying to kill the beast.
This part shows their true personalities and characteristics; it reveals their stories and scars while bonding them together.
To me, only then does the shark begin to really appear menacing and play its horror role.
Its intelligence and endurance are uncanny. I mean, it hides under the ship and gets hit with 3 harpoon shots, multiple bullets, gets stabbed multiple times, constantly bangs its head against the ship or metal cage, and is only taken out by an explosion.
And ironicly enough, one of the only part that genuinly scared me was not involving the shark, but the one where Hooper checks out someones boat and the dead body appears through the hole.
By the way, they did a great job with the shark prop; it was way more realistic than I expected from 1975.
Throughout the movie, the only sensible character was Hooper, cause he was reasonable to the bone. Sure, Brody was logical, but Hooper was so amazing to me because he was the type that would survive a horror movie.
Big respect to Hooper, a true legend.
And that ending is perfect.
It's realistic in Quint getting killed, but also very grand and satisfying.> Smile, you son of a BITCH!
