Pure energy. Abstracting much of the narrative development and priming all the tension to e.x.p.l.o.d.e creates a story more immediate about its political and social nihilism.  I wish they found like twenty more minutes to more clearly line up some of its subplots (I’m completely convinced this could be done irrespective of what happens in the manga), but this is still one of the most breathtaking human efforts that can be seen on film.
