Double Indemnity
I wonder if it’s a modern reading, but I can’t help but watch Stanwyck wondering if she’s genuinely a cold-hearted killer or just someone helplessly trying outsmart the tenets capitalism.
Anways, Double Indemnity presents two worlds at odds with each other. For MacMurray, the question is how to get out with his head on his shoulders, but, perhaps, also, which one of these worlds is actually genuine. The answer we get is somewhere in the middle.
Wilder is crazy for being able to spoil the ending in the first scene, yet still make the whole film suspenseful.
