Beau Is Afraid
I’m Afraid, And you should be too…
(Context: Reid and I just started our relationship on Friday, though we’ve been best friends before. At this time we were both 17)
I got the chance to go see the film with my girlfriend Reid at the Paradiso IMAX Premiere in Memphis on the 18th. This movie was my most anticipated film of the year so I was extremely excited. We arrived 20 minutes late because we talked too much in the car. When we walked in, Beau was walking into his Apartment after what I thought was the opening sequence of the film. I’m so sad I missed it, but it made it more interesting cause we jumped right into the action.
Beau is Afraid has got to be the best movie I have ever seen in my entire life. I can’t explain it. We left the movie right after the Title Card popped up at the end credits. I was the only one who clapped. The entire room was completely silent, waiting for Beau to pop up from the boat. But when the title card came, he didn’t. The lights went up, and we bolted out of the building. We ran to my car, looking and smiling at eachother while our drinks spill out of our hands. We got in the car and had the most life changing conversation of our lives.
When we got home, we both couldn’t fathom what we had just seen. I didn’t sleep for 3 days. I spent that time texting everyone that I’ve ever cared for in my life that everything will be ok and that we have so much time to enjoy this little life we own. Once I finally slept, what followed was probably the worst week of my entire life so far.
I went full Beau, said things to my parents that I never thought would come out of my mouth, lost friends, gained friends, etc. But to top it all off, my entire family thought I was losing my mind. They thought I had done acid or something which turned me into what I am, which I hadn’t. The last time I smoked weed was the night before the movie (and I fucking love weed). They took my phone, keys, and my ability to leave for an entire week. They were also giving me sooooo many fucking pills, I felts so trapped in my own home. My parents turned into their own version of Grace and Roger. I was not happy, how could I have been. I felt like everyone had turned their back on me and just thought of me as a psycho.
I did a lot of crazy ass things, but the odd thing is that I don’t regret a single bit of it. I jumped out my window to get in my friends car because my parents wouldn’t let me leave. I told my family that I would kill myself before ending up in a situation like Beau’s, which of course they couldn’t understand.
There’s so much more to say, but I can’t put it all into words on a Letterboxd review. To sum it up, Beau is afraid, I’m afraid, and you should be too. But don’t be too afraid, cause then you’ll lose the opportunities that could come to you.
