The dude abides

I am blown away by the cinematography in this movie. Masterfully directed by Kubrick. There is a reason this movie still sets the standard almost 50 years later. Technically, there is almost nothing to critique. And yet, it never fully pulls me in. What’s missing is difficult to articulate precisely because the craft is so flawless. The film comes across as engineered, a precise and calculated construction, rather than an artistic expression. For this reason it falls short in my eyes. Again this is undeniably a masterpiece in every way. The shots, the performances, the score. But, ironically, perhaps its own perfection is why I fail to connect with it.

Good if you like bad movies
