I want to start by saying that this was an absolute masterpiece (and one of my favorite films of the year so far). I remember when this film was first announced and being so excited. When I first saw the trailer, my expectations about the film skyrocketed. After watching this film, I can confidently say that nolan exceeded all of my expectations. In this film, every single performer is on their a game. There’s no single performance that I would consider “bad” or “horrible”. But, I do want to praise Anne Hathaway’s performance in particular. She truly sunk into her character and I loved how she made the choice to modulate her voice. Her delivery of “I want Odysseus” is still ringing in my ear at the time I’m currently writing this (1 am). Also, she was so incredibly expressive in this role. In my opinion, this is one of my favorite performances of hers (along with rachel getting married, mother mary, and interstellar). I know that this film will get a lot of nominations (and hopefully a lot of wins this upcoming award season). Even though there are still many other films coming out this year, I am confident that anne hathaway will be a two time academy award winner at this time next year. Every single technical aspect of the film was perfection. Ludwig Goransson’s score was so beautiful and absolutely moved me. The cinematography was so incredible. I also loved every single intricate detail that was put into the production design of this film. Also, the sound design was so epic. I did see this in imax, which might be a reason for this. For example, I loved the scene where odysseus and his crew encounter the sirens. The sound design goes from being incredibly muted to suddenly booming in my ear. This is semi-unrelated. But, I remember watching the knicks win the championship and wondering if there will ever be a movie that will live up to the emotions I felt during that moment. Well, it’s safe to say that there was a film that was able to match that moment, and it’s “The Odyssey”.
