FUCKING MASTERPIECE. I mean truly this film reaches character depths that you very rarely see in movies, but when you do you immediately get that feeling, that almost puckering feeling in your butthole thats telling you this is a magnificent piece of cinema. This film deals with the concept of growing up, and is a coming of age story that doesn’t limit itself to one gender or even more incredibly one age. We see every character at a pinnacle moment in their life within their family unit, but even more significantly how their respective age attached to their role in their household and society, both emotionally and physchologically impacts their way of life. The cinematography is both aesthetically pleasing and meaningful. The film does not subject itself to simple visual metaphors to represent coming of age, but rather shows a well stylized reality of an upper class taiwanese family’s story. The score is phenomenal, the acting feels real, and the form allows for every emotion to flow freely and naturally. This film will make you laugh, cry, smile, relate, and angry all at the same time. Ultimately, a remarkable project, and should be seen by all, cinephile or not. I have few words left to say other than, watch this film!!!
