Angel's Egg
This movie was such a work of art, I love it. First of all, as I always like to mention, the animation in this film is wonderful. The art style is just so nice, I don’t know why I like it so much it’s just great. And I love the mysterious and grim mood the movie has. Combined with the arcane characters and mystifying scenery, this movie gives off such an eerie and creepy vibe that I honestly think works really well for what it is. And the design for the characters, specifically the girl, are so well made. The girl’s light colors contrast the dark environments of the movie, and her more graceful look juxtaposes the cryptic and eerie undertones of the movie, both in the setting and in the plot and characters. Speaking of the plot, it’s kind of hard to talk about since, unlike most movies, it doesn’t seem to be the main driver of this movie. Instead, I feel this movie is more symbolically driven than it is plot wise. And, truthfully there can be so many meanings for different people that this movie can offer. How I see it, I can see multiple themes or messages this movie conveys. It could be the passage of time and how hard it is to let things go. It could be the preservation of innocence in a world of darkness and unsettling and unknown motives. It could be the perseverance of the soul and the being of someone through hard and trying times, when whether or not you’ll even make it through is uncertain. There’s three elements in this movie: the egg, the young girl, and the mysterious man. Just with those three items, this movie already can convey so many meanings and emotions in a very beautiful way. The egg is the protected, the innocence or self worth in one’s soul. The young girl is the carrier, the embodiment of a person, portrayed as a person, meant to represent more the idea of a person than any actual person, if that makes sense. And the man, he could be two things, the liberator or truth bringer, or the danger lurking outside. Either way, he becomes such an essential character to the symbolism of this film. I could probably write a whole essay about this movie, but I don’t really want to since I’m writing this pretty late so I’ll leave it here. I don’t know exactly if I’d recommend this movie to just anyone, I myself had a hard time understanding some of the scenes in the movie and wouldn’t expect others to get them either, but it is a great watch if you’re into more symbolic film, and it’s really short so a more easy watch.
