Millennium Actress
This was such a perfect movie to watch. First of all, I’d like to mention that it really complimented the last movie I watched, Perfect Blue, being that it was made by the same director and both followed the life and struggles of an actress, it’s was a nice parallel and I really enjoyed both movies. This film had such good animation, I don’t know what it was br it made every scene and every character and everything else so beautiful, it’s such an amazing piece of art, this movie is, that’s just so monumental to me. And the plot, it was just perfect. The retelling of an acclaimed actress’s life, her struggles in finding the one thing she truly wanted to find all those years, her love. And what I loved was how it blended her acting career with her actual life story, telling the story of her pursuit with her movies. Once again, this was very reminiscent of Perfect Blue and I just love that. And I also loved how it just pulls you into the career of Chiyoko in the opening credits, immediately showcasing her art as an actress. But it wasn’t just the plot itself that was wonderful, it was the message behind it too. This movie is so beautifully symbolic, it’s honestly so amazing what they conveyed with this film. People chase love, just the idea of love gets people so emotional, it’s such an important drive for individuals and humanity as a whole. This drive for love being shown through Chiyoko was executed flawlessly. She not only meets the love of her life on a seemingly random day, but she saves him. The key, the promise she made to him, was so powerful that, even after so many years, she held onto that promise. People doubted her, calling her foolish and stupid for believing in a kind of true love only children believe in, but nothing stopped her. And it’s this love that propels her into a seemingly immortal life. Again, another parallel to her acting career that fits the theme of the story perfectly. The truest forms of love preserve and live in one’s heart forever, just like how her life was destined to last forever. (Spoiler alert) and in the end, on her deathbed, she keeps holding onto the key, holding onto the promise she vowed never to break, and because of that she never did. And, they really were destined to meet again, just in another realm. And finally, after all is said and done, it was the pursuit of love that became more fulfilling for Chiyoko than the actual goal, just like how in life, when constantly pursuing a goal for your whole life, it’s that chase that becomes what’s worth living for. Honestly, this movie was so beautiful in its symbolism. And, I also liked the comedic relief breaks with Genya and Kyoji, it really served to lighten the mood of the movie without weakening the overall message. If you have the time, please watch this movie. Trust me when I say this, it will probably change your life.
