The Breadwinner
This movie was heavy. In my reviews, I don’t typically go too much into detail about the underlying message of a movie, but I cannot ignore it in this case. A story about a girl who has to go against her society’s norms just to provide for her family, a critique on the middle eastern countries that use cultural tradition to oppress women, a lesson on a historical subject never spoken about. This film flawlessly captures all three of those things, it’s speaks volumes about the world and how lucky we are to watch it rather than live it. The animation is amazing, it perfectly fits the story and the message. The characters, as I always say, felt real, they’re all tragic in their own way, yet so hopeful as well. The pacing was done right, encapsulating the suddenness of war, especially in a war torn region like Afghanistan. I definitely think more people should see and talk about this movie, it really shows a side of the world most never hear about.
