Whiplash
Let me tell you how much I love this movie. Never in my life have I seen such a great example of storytelling in a movie, and I’m frankly honored to be amongst the people who get to say they’ve watched this. Firstly, I want to get into the incredible detail in the settings and the scenes. The color-grading in every scene perfectly matched the mood, and it just exemplifies the overall plot and meaning. And the fact that you have to stay focused on the movie in order to catch the subtle actions, like a simple misplaced bag, is something that truly drives this movie. You can’t half watch it, you can’t put it off an hour through and tell yourself you’ll watch the rest tomorrow. You need to watch the entire thing, start to finish, no interruptions, that’s perfect. Secondly, the characters. I have seen great characters in movies before, but Andrew single handily might just be the greatest example of ambition at the cost of mentality and sanity I’ve ever seen. His motives are constant throughout the film’s length, but is flexible enough to not expect what he does next. And Fletcher is such a great character, honestly a perfect example of a star maker, a man who will go to any length to find the next big musician, even if it’s seen as aggressive or too hard on them. Thirdly, the story. This story is so simple, a drummer who wants to make it big, and will not stop trying to achieve that goal no matter what gets in his way. But, even with such a simple story, this movie managed to push it all the way into one of the greatest movies ever made. I can’t really even put into words how well this was executed, it’s simply a masterpiece. Watch this movie, it’s such an inspiring and amazing film and I think everyone should see it.
