Your Name.
This movie is just amazing. I went into this movie not expecting much, but this beat my expectations by a mile. Firstly, the animation in this is just so beautiful, the amount of detail in each scene is astonishing. I love how intricate the city scenes looked, emphasizing how detailed and ornate the world truly is. And the scene with the comet, actually every scene with the comet, are all probably some of the most beautifully animated scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie hands down. And I just love how perfectly it manages to both maintain focus on the two main characters, Taki and Mitsuha, while also managing to fit in the relations and interactions with other characters. Not only do they help develope the story of the two main characters, but they add something to the movie that just completes it. The genuine concern for them, the way they want to help the two even when they have no idea what they’re talking about, their relationship with the main characters really serve to make a wonderfully written movie. And the plot, oh my god this story is actually so amazing. Firstly, the literal plot about Taki and Mitsuha and how they have to figure out how to live with this life swapping, it’s very interesting. That’s just the first part, the second being the comet. Without the addition of the comet and everything that followed, this movie would’ve been okay at most and would feel sort of incomplete. There’s more urgency to the story, I think it’s done really well. This long pursuit of trying to find this person you fell in love with years ago, it’s a pretty common trope but it just gets me every time. It kind of reminds me of the movie Millennium Actress, and I love that movie too so that’s just great. But, taking a step back to further analyze this movie, it’s deeper meaning is so impactful. People’s lives are all so different from one another, and it would be a challenge getting so caught up in another person’s day to day. But, when you truly try to figure it all out, it’s almost like your two lives form into one beautiful thing, a life of two. In this movie, so much seperated Taki and Mitsuha. The difference in where they live, the fact they live three years apart from one another, the difference between Taki’s city life and Mitsuha’s small town life, the difference in tradition, and so much more. It all serves to portray how far people can seem, especially since there’s a whole 8 billion of us who never get to know each other. But they overcome those differences, and it’s such a lovely thing to see. And in the end, things don’t work out in the short term, it in the long term might come back with better success. That brings me into the ending (spoilers after this). After the comet’s inevitable impact with Itomori, hope seems lost for Taki and, eventually after getting back into his own normal life, forgets about Mitsuha. He moves on, but the memory of his search never does leave him. And, after 5 whole years, finds Mitsuha by total coincidence. It’s beautiful, all of this movie is just so beautiful. If you have the time and enjoy movies like this, please watch it, it’s totally worth the time.
