Nightcrawler
This film had a Taxi Driver-esque feel to it. The characters, shots of Louis (Gylenhaal) behind the wheel, and the psychotic main characters demeanor. It wasn’t executed to perfection, but was a fun ride throughout.
The title ‘Nightcrawler’ is a representation of the parasitic relationship he had with his work environment and his “colleagues”. It delves into the un-empathetic side of business, and how far one is willing to go to advance their career, this film obviously providing the extremist perspective.
The cinematography was intriguing. The still shots of California's urban and countryside as the sun was setting built up the suspense of the film.
I found the ending quite unsatisfying however. It felt rushed and the clicheness of them driving off into the distance after Louis gives a talk felt poorly written to me.
Overall, the originality of the film, and exploration of uncommon themes was quite interesting. 8/10.
