Fallen Angels
SPOILERS AHEAD
Wow this movie honestly blew me away. I went into this movie expecting a short movie with good nighttime vibes but it was honestly so much more than that. This movie more focuses on making you feel things than on plot so if you are planning to watch this keep that in mind. Fallen Angels defiantly has that nighttime vibe and that is one of the main appeals but it also tells a tale of isolation and loneliness that was honestly super good. It follows mainly 3 people through multiple nights in Hong Kong. One of the main dynamics is the relationships between the assassin and his assistant. They both feel lonely and isolated and cope with it in different ways. We see how the assassin repeatedly hooks up with Blondie just for some company and we see how the assistant starts crying while touching herself. These relationship between these two was super interesting as they both clearly feel something for each other, primarily the assistant, but have no way to express it. After the assassin decides to quit the assistant feels empty and even more lonely than before which leads into the ending that I will get into later. The other main character we are introduced to is He Zhiwu. Zhiwu is a mute character who has a really interesting story. He makes money by forcing people to do things like buy ice cream, buy vegetables, and more. We watch as his own love story grows with a girl named Charlie. Throughout the time they spend together Zhiwu changes himself to try and impress her but we realize she doesn’t feel the same way. Eventually she stops hanging out with him as she meets another man she does like. The unrequited love the. Zhiwu had for charlie was super sad because we watch Charlie move from different men all why Zhiwu loves her. Another aspect of Zhiwu story is the relationship with his dad. Zhiwu had taken camcorder footage of him leading up to his death and we see his dad watching it shortly after he dies as he has a moment of happiness. After the dads death Zhiwu is at an all time low point where his dad has just died and Charlie has forgotten all about him. This is where the assistant and Zhiwus stories cross over as they meet in a restaurant and drive away into the night sharing there lonliness together while not speaking. To conclude this movie blew me away. The way Wong Kar wai was able to make a super vibey and aschetic movie all while having a super interesting love story between multiple different people that are all untwined with one another was amazing. This movie is weird but addicting and it was super good. Overall I would definantly recommend this movie to anyone.
