Mr. McMahon
That final quote from McMahon fully encapsulates this whole series. “Who’s the exaggeration, Mr. McMahon (the character) or the real Vince McMahon?”.
Funniest thing to me about this doc was that 2mins into the series that he pretty much lies. He claims to never wanted to talk about himself, except so much of the WWE product contains him in it.
The hypocrisy increases when he claims what Ted Turner/WCW was doing was wrong, meanwhile he was doing the same thing with WWF.
I saw a tweet earlier today about how McMahon has fostered a father dynamic with his wrestlers, and how CM Punk said something similar in the past - but the tweet basically joked that it was wrestling stockholm syndome. This was basically true, with the way the wrestling cast have praised/defended Vince, especially when they weren’t sure how to answer the question “What is Vince McMahon’s legacy?”.
Usually I dislike Netflix docs, because it’s just high budgeted YouTube video essays, elongated to 4-6 40min episodes that adds little to what actually happened. But I straight up enjoyed this series (probably slightly due to my bias towards wrestling culture), and I learned something new, such as that this wasn’t the first time that McMahon was accused of sexual assault.
It also helps that they got people who’re part of the wrestling company to be involved in these interviews, and they had decades of footage (seen & never before seen) to work with - so no BS AI generated imaging like they did with that one True Crime docuseries (I guess it didn’t stop them from using it to create their poster which contains a boxing ring instead lol).
Overall, I would recommend anyone to try and watch this series. And props to Netflix for actually releasing this series even though WWE is coming to their platform next year lmao.
